1.
feed: give advice/information
Here, it means to provide someone with information or to tell them something.
2.
Blundering: "Blundering" suggests clumsiness or lack of skill or precision. It implies that Neville's actions, possibly in trying to find Harry and others in the dark, were not executed smoothly or effectively. It doesn't necessarily carry the same sense of sympathy as "poor" does, but rather indicates that Neville's attempts might have been clumsy or awkward.
In summary, "blundering" focuses more on making mistakes or errors in a noticeable or careless manner, while "clumsy" emphasizes a general lack of coordination or gracefulness in someone's actions.
4.
In the sentence "breathing heavily through her long, pointed nose," the preposition "through" indicates the manner in which Professor McGonagall is breathing heavily. It suggests that the breath is passing through or coming out of her long, pointed nose.
So, "through" here is used to describe the pathway or channel of the breathing, emphasizing the visual image of breath coming out of her nose.
5.
"Dreading the dawn" refers to feeling anxious, worried, or apprehensive about the arrival of dawn, the early morning light that marks the beginning of a new day. In the context you provided, both Harry and Neville are described as dreading the dawn, suggesting that they are both anticipating something unpleasant or fearful that will occur when the new day arrives.
dread: to be very afraid of something
6.
"the bottom" refers metaphorically to a feeling of stability or solidity. When something drops out of the bottom, it implies a sudden loss of that stability or security.
So, in this context, "the bottom" symbolizes the sense of calmness or stability that Harry previously felt in his stomach. The phrase conveys the sudden and intense feeling of anxiety or fear that causes Harry to feel as if that stability has been abruptly taken away from him, leaving him with a sense of emptiness or distress in his stomach.
7.
"Loads of" is a more colloquial expression that suggests a large or significant quantity. It's commonly used in informal speech and writing to convey a casual tone. In this context, "loads of points" implies that Fred and George have lost a considerable number of points over time.
"Many" is a more formal and standard term for indicating a large quantity. It's commonly used in both formal and informal contexts, but it's less casual than "loads of." In this context, "many points" also suggests a significant number of points lost by Fred and George.
10.
"as bad a time" is a more formal and traditional structure. It is commonly used in English to compare the degree of one thing with another. This structure is often preferred in written English or formal speech.
"as a bad time" is less common but still grammatically correct. This structure might sound slightly less formal and might be used more in spoken English or informal writing.
Both sentences convey the same meaning: that they didn't have as difficult a time as Harry, but they still faced challenges because they weren't as well-known.
12.
"Dappled" refers to having patches or spots of light and shade, usually with contrasting colors or shades. In the context you provided, Firenze's head is described as "dappled silver," indicating that there are patches of silver color on his head that are illuminated by the moonlight, creating a pattern of light and shade. This word is often used to describe the appearance of something that has been partially illuminated or shaded, creating a visually interesting effect.
14.
When you clench your fist, you close your hand tightly by curling your fingers inward. Similarly, when something clenches around something else, it tightens or constricts around it. In this context, it suggests that Harry felt a sudden, intense sensation of pressure or tightness around his heart, as if it were being tightly squeezed or constricted by an iron fist. This description emphasizes the severity and intensity of Harry's emotional or physical reaction.
16.
"Canter" is a term used in horse riding and refers to a moderately fast gait or pace that is faster than a trot but slower than a gallop. It is a smooth and easy-paced gait, often used for leisurely riding or for covering moderate distances.
17.
In the phrase "in a matter of seconds," "matter" refers to a particular subject, situation, or issue. Here, it suggests that something is happening or being discussed within a very short period of time, specifically seconds. So, "matter" in this context denotes the topic or duration of time being referenced, emphasizing the brevity or immediacy of the event being described.
